Remote education: information for families

At Stoke Newington School, we offer a wide breadth of subjects designed to be thorough, ambitious and challenging. Taught by dedicated and conscientious teachers, it is vital students are present for every school day to progress their learning and benefit from their teachers’ expertise.

Remote education is not an equal alternative to attendance in school. It is used as a last resort for two general categories:

  • School closure, where access to the school is restricted.
  • Individual cases where a student is unable to attend school but is able to learn.

In the event such cases occur, remote education has the benefit of allowing students to continue their learning and stay connected to their teachers. Our remote education approach is based on the Department for Education’s ‘Providing remote education: guidance for schools.’

As much as possible, students who are studying remotely will follow the same curriculum as in school. The only adaptations made are when the curriculum calls for specific resources not readily available at home. This particularly applies to our creative and/or resource-heavy subjects, such as Music, Art, DT, and PE. In these instances, the curriculum is adapted to ensure that progress in the students’ learning continues.

Remote education school day

Students follow their normal daily timetable of subjects. The subject work is set on Microsoft Teams and will include all resources necessary to complete the lesson. Some subjects use additional learning platforms. For example:

  • Seneca Learning – Used by Computer Science, Geography, History and Science
  • Educake – Used by Geography, Science
  • Hour of Code – Used by Computer Science
  • Sparx – Used by Maths
  • Cognito Science – Used by Science

Communication is vital during remote education and we encourage parents and carers to let us know if access to technology is impeding on the student’s ability to continue their learning.

Students with additional needs

Where pupils with special education needs and disabilities (SEND) are not able to access remote education without adult support, the school will work with families to put in place reasonable adjustments.

Provision of free school meals

Where pupils eligible for benefits-related free school meals are receiving remote education, the school will work with the school catering team or food provider to make sure those pupils can have a good quality lunch. This will ensure that the school continues to support eligible pupils for the short period where they are unable to attend school.

Safeguarding

In all circumstances, the school with prioritise vulnerable children and young people for face-to-face education. We will try to support any young person who we believe may have challenging circumstances at home.
